Golden Knights’ Brayden McNabb Ejected for Interference

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Brayden McNabb was ejected during Game 5 of the NHL Western Conference second-round playoff series after delivering a heavy hit on Anaheim Ducks forward Ryan Poehling. The incident happened midway through the first period on Tuesday night in Las Vegas and quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the game.

Officials reviewed the play and gave McNabb a five-minute major penalty for interference along with a game misconduct, forcing the veteran defenseman to leave the game early. Poehling was hit hard into the boards and needed help from teammates and medical staff before being taken off the ice. The Anaheim Ducks later confirmed that the forward would not return because of an upper-body injury.

The collision happened near the Ducks’ blue line while Poehling was away from the puck. After video review, referees ruled that the contact qualified as interference. Many players from both teams reacted immediately after the hit, and the game became more physical following the incident.

Despite losing one of their top defensemen early in the match, the Vegas Golden Knights managed to secure a 3-2 overtime victory against the Anaheim Ducks. Forward Pavel Dorofeyev scored the game-winning goal in overtime, helping Vegas take a 3-2 lead in the playoff series.

McNabb plays an important role on the Golden Knights’ defense and is known for his physical style of play. The 35-year-old Canadian defenseman has been one of Vegas’ most experienced players during the postseason and previously helped the franchise win the Stanley Cup in 2023. His ejection created concern for the team because the Golden Knights were already dealing with injuries and defensive pressure during the playoff run.

Following the game, hockey analysts and fans debated whether the hit deserved an ejection or possible further disciplinary action from the NHL. Some believed the officials made the correct decision because Poehling was not in possession of the puck at the time of the contact, while others argued the play was part of the intensity normally seen during playoff hockey. The NHL Department of Player Safety has not yet announced whether additional punishment or suspension will be considered.

The playoff series between Vegas and Anaheim has become increasingly physical and emotional as both teams continue fighting for a place in the Western Conference Final. Game 6 is expected to take place in Anaheim, where the Ducks will try to keep their season alive while the Golden Knights attempt to close out the series and advance to the next round.
