The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026 is in turmoil after senior players initiated a high-profile boycott that led to the dismissal of a prominent official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). An updated match schedule was disclosed on Thursday following abandoned games as players refused to play until a public apology was issued and M Nazmul Islam, the Finance Committee Chairman and Board Director, resigned.
According to the revised schedule, matches that were set for January 15 are now slated for January 16. Additionally, games originally on January 16 and 17 will now be played on January 17 and 18, while the Eliminator and Qualifier 1, initially set for January 19, have been rescheduled for January 20. The BCB assured that these changes are crucial for the tournament's progression.
The issue ignited when Nazmul Islam made provocative comments directed at Tamim Iqbal, the former captain of Bangladesh. In response to Tamim's call for talks with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the T20 World Cup 2026 host disagreements, Islam labeled him as an “Indian agent,” igniting outrage in the cricket community.
Prominent players, including Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, quickly organized through the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) to instigate the boycott. The repercussions were swift, as teams already scheduled to compete on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium skipped the toss, compelling the BCB to act promptly.
In response, the BCB convened an urgent meeting and announced the termination of Nazmul Islam's role as Finance Committee Chairman. The board indicated that this decision was made to preserve the effective operation of the board and safeguard the dignity of all players.
Despite his resignation, players' demands remain unmet. They continue to seek a public apology from Islam and his complete removal from all responsibilities in the Bangladesh Cricket Board. With tensions still running high, the forthcoming BPL 2026 matches will be observed closely as the league endeavors to regain stability amid ongoing unrest.
