Former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was released from DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Thursday, just a week post his successful double hernia operation. After some minor medical follow-ups, he was taken back to the federal police headquarters to continue serving his 27-year prison sentence.
The surgery received the nod from Brazil’s Supreme Court and was conducted without any issues. Nevertheless, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who imposed Bolsonaro's sentence, turned down his appeal for house arrest, mandating his immediate return to prison after the surgery.
Since his stabbing during a campaign rally in 2018, Bolsonaro has faced numerous medical procedures. His current detention is in a private 12-square-meter space that includes a bed, ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, television, and a writing desk, isolating him from contact with other inmates.
In December, political tensions flared as Bolsonaro nominated his eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, as his party's candidate for the upcoming elections, challenging incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
While neither Flávio Bolsonaro nor former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro addressed Jair’s return to prison, Michelle showed her support on social media, stating, “There is a Brazil of good people who love you and pray for you. We will overcome the tough times.”
In September, Bolsonaro and several associates faced convictions for trying to undermine Brazil’s democratic structure following his election defeat in 2022. These charges involve leading an armed group and inciting violence against President Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice Moraes. Bolsonaro has persistently denied all claims against him.
