The Toronto Blue Jays have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Chase Lee from the Detroit Tigers, sending left-handed pitching prospect Johan Simon in return.
Simon, 24, has been part of the Blue Jays’ organization since signing as an international free agent in 2021. This season, he pitched at the Double-A level with the Dunedin Blue Jays, showing steady development and promise for the future.
Lee, 27, made his major league debut in 2025, appearing in 32 games for the Tigers. He ended his rookie season with a 4.10 ERA and a 4-1 win-loss record across 37.1 innings. Known for his sidearm style, Lee mixes several pitches, with his sweeper and sinker being his most frequently used, and a fastball that reaches the low 90s.
Originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB June Amateur Draft, Lee joined Detroit at the 2024 trade deadline as part of the deal that sent reliever Andrew Chafin to Texas.
Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins had previously highlighted the bullpen as a key area for improvement following last season. Toronto completed one of its most remarkable campaigns in franchise history, narrowly losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a Game 7 extra-innings thriller in the World Series.
With Lee joining the roster, the Blue Jays aim to strengthen their relief pitching and build on their near-championship season.
