Blue Jackets notch third straight win, sweep back-to-back set

Make it three straight wins for the Columbus Blue Jackets — plus something that has become a rarity around Nationwide Arena.

After downing the Toronto Maple Leafs 6–3 on Oct. 29, the Blue Jackets (6–4–0) not only entertained a crowd of 16,558 but also swept their second of 15 back-to-back sets on this season’s schedule. That may sound routine, but the Jackets had achieved that feat only six times in the previous five years.

Coming off an exciting 4–3 overtime comeback win in Buffalo on Oct. 28, the Blue Jackets returned home looking to complete the sweep against a Toronto team that had also won the night before. This time, Columbus found the broom closet first.

“Sometimes it’s about how you approach it, knowing the year prior it hasn’t gone your way,” said forward Mathieu Olivier, who scored his first goal of the season and added a career-high three assists. “This year, we know how to stay composed and handle ourselves in those situations.”

The Blue Jackets’ checking line of Charlie Coyle, Cole Sillinger, and Olivier led the charge. Coyle notched a career-high four assists, Olivier finished with four points (one goal, three assists), and Sillinger contributed two goals and an assist. The trio dominated both ends of the ice and were inches away from another goal in the first period when the puck stopped just shy of the goal line.

“They’ve played really well for a while now,” said head coach Dean Evason. “They just hadn’t gotten rewarded. They’ve been doing the right things in all three zones, so it’s nice to see them finally get rewarded.”

Goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made 34 saves to secure the win, stifling the Maple Leafs (5–5–1) despite Toronto outshooting Columbus 37–25. Blue Jackets defensemen Zach Werenski, Dante Fabbro, and Ivan Provorov also added goals in a well-rounded team effort.

For the Maple Leafs, Cayden Primeau took the loss in net, while John Tavares, Sammy Blais, and Nicholas Robertson scored. Tavares’ goal marked the 500th of his NHL career — a milestone moment overshadowed by Columbus’ commanding performance.
