Ben Sasse Opens Up About Terminal Pancreatic Cancer Fight Ahead

Post by : Mina Carter

Ben Sasse, the former U.S. senator from Nebraska who served from 2015 to 2023, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with stage-four metastatic pancreatic cancer. In a heartfelt social media post, Sasse called the diagnosis a "death sentence" but showed strong resolve, saying he is determined to fight the disease.

At 53 years old, Sasse has built a reputation as a principled politician. During his time in the Senate, he was one of only seven Republicans to vote for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump following the January 6 Capitol riot. Sasse has spoken often about the need for Congress to uphold its integrity and hold the executive branch accountable, underscoring his belief that “some lines cannot be crossed.”

A graduate of both Harvard and Yale universities, Sasse's career extended beyond politics. After leaving the Senate, he became the president of the University of Florida. However, he stepped down from this role in July 2024 to focus on the health needs of his wife, who recently suffered a stroke. The couple has three children together.

Sasse made his cancer diagnosis public during the Advent season, a time when Christians prepare their hearts for the coming of Christmas. Reflecting on his faith, he expressed hope and determination, stating, “I’m not going down without a fight.”

In addition to his health struggles, Sasse has faced recent scrutiny over his spending while serving as university president. A review by the Florida Auditor General found that he may have inappropriately used university funds, although Sasse has denied any wrongdoing.

As he confronts this serious illness, Sasse’s message highlights both his faith and resilience. His openness about the diagnosis has drawn widespread attention and support.
