Belfast City Airport has announced a new plan that could bring nearly £2 billion of investment to Northern Ireland. The plan is part of the airport’s 2040 Master Plan and includes the island’s first direct train connection to the airport. This new rail link will allow passengers to travel to and from the airport without using cars, making travel easier and more eco-friendly.
Economic Benefits Expected
Matthew Hall, Chief Executive of Belfast City Airport, said the plan could generate £1.7 billion in economic benefits by 2040. “We want more passengers to arrive by public transport and leave their cars at home,” he said. Hall added that the Master Plan is a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” that will help both travelers and local businesses.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill praised the plan, saying it shows “great ambition” and she looks forward to seeing the next steps. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly said the plan “has the potential to deliver huge benefits for Northern Ireland.”
Connectivity Is Key
Clare Guinness, Chief Executive of Belfast Chamber, said the airport is a vital part of Belfast’s economy. “The airport is a lifeline for commerce and business,” she said. She added that Belfast is growing as a city, and the airport must be ready to support its future potential.
Passenger Opinions
Visitors to Belfast City Airport shared their thoughts on the new plans. Alan and Sue Thompson from New Zealand said the airport could use a makeover, but their overall experience was positive.
Linda Hill, traveling to Southampton, said a train stop at the airport would be very helpful. She also suggested that a nearby hotel would benefit passengers in case of flight delays.
Brian McMullan from Larne said the train could reduce car usage. “I had to drive to a friend’s house and he drove me here. That’s two cars on the road. If there was a train, I wouldn’t have needed a car at all,” he said.
