A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale shook the Bay of Bengal on Saturday morning.
The tremor occurred at 11:48 a.m. IST at a shallow depth of about 15 kilometres. Its epicentre was located at latitude 12.59° N and longitude 92.34° E, far offshore in the Bay of Bengal.
Due to its location and moderate intensity, there have been no reports of damage or injuries. Experts noted that earthquakes occurring at shallow depths can sometimes be felt more strongly near the epicentre, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.
Details of the earthquake were shared on social media, confirming the time, location, and magnitude of the event. Officials also stated that no tsunami warning has been issued but advised people in coastal areas to remain cautious.
This earthquake happened a day after a stronger 6.8-magnitude quake struck the North Pacific Ocean. While the two events are not related, they highlight the continuous movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates and ongoing seismic activity in different regions around the world.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged residents living near the coast to stay alert, even though no immediate risk has been reported.
