In a key diplomatic maneuver, Bangladesh's interim government has reached out to India with a formal request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Currently residing in New Delhi, Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal. The 78-year-old fled Bangladesh in August 2024 amid the student-led "July Uprising" that resulted in her removal from power.
This latest appeal marks the third time Dhaka has formally sought her extradition, following similar requests made in December 2024 and in the wake of the tribunal's ruling. Alongside Hasina, Bangladesh is also seeking the return of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who has been similarly sentenced and is believed to be in India. Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the former police chief and a state witness, has received a five-year prison term.
The Bangladeshi foreign ministry has reiterated that the existing extradition treaty mandates India to surrender convicted criminals. Officials underscored that any refusal from India would be considered a significant diplomatic affront and a serious impediment to justice in Bangladesh.
The political landscape in Bangladesh remains unstable following Hasina's ousting. Reports from the UN indicate that the crackdown during July-August 2024 led to around 1,400 fatalities, forming the basis of the tribunal's charges. As a result of these protests, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has taken charge of the interim government, striving to restore stability.
Despite the prevailing tensions, recent diplomatic activities suggest a cautious approach to engagement. Bangladesh's National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman met with Indian officials in New Delhi, and reports indicate that India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has been invited to visit Dhaka. Analysts predict that the ongoing developments will challenge not only the bilateral relationship but also how India handles extradition requests involving prominent political individuals.
As the situation unfolds, attention is focused on India's response to Dhaka's renewed extradition request, which could have significant ramifications for regional diplomacy and the delicate political situation in Bangladesh.
