Rising Casualties as Bangladesh Endures Aftershocks from Earthquake

Dhaka, Bangladesh – The aftermath of the 5.5-magnitude earthquake that struck Bangladesh on Friday has tragically resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals, with numerous others injured, as residents brace themselves for continued tremors.

Adding to the anxiety, a milder quake, registered at 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit Ashulia, a district north of Dhaka, at 10:36 am local time, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. While this tremor was less harmful than the previous day’s event, its timing reignited fears among those living in the area.

In Ashulia and neighboring regions, many structures that were already compromised by Friday’s quake are now showing new signs of damage. Residents have been focused on salvaging personal items and evaluating the condition of their homes. Shahnaj Parvin, aged 44, described her ordeal, stating how she clung to a mahogany tree during the quake, only to return home to find shattered glassware and damaged walls.

In response, the government has activated its emergency operation center to understand the full extent of the devastation and to organize both rescue and relief measures. Fortunately, Saturday’s tremor did not result in further casualties, but it underscores Bangladesh’s exposure to seismic threats.

Seismologists emphasize that Bangladesh’s geographical setting makes it susceptible to quakes. While it’s common to experience smaller aftershocks following a significant earthquake, a dense population, aging infrastructure, and inadequate preparedness amplify the public’s apprehension.
