A tragic shooting in New York has left a community in shock after a 7-month-old girl was shot dead while sitting in her stroller in Brooklyn. The incident happened on a busy street during the afternoon, where several families and children were present. Police believe the baby was hit by stray gunfire during a suspected gang-related attack.

According to the New York City Police Department, two men were riding a moped against traffic when one of them pulled out a gun and fired at least two rounds. The suspects quickly fled the scene, creating panic among people nearby. Video footage from the area helped police track the suspects, and one person who matched the shooter’s description has been taken into custody. The search for the second suspect is still ongoing.

At the time of the shooting, the baby’s parents ran into a nearby shop to take cover. Moments later, they looked into the stroller and found their daughter seriously injured. She was rushed to the hospital but was later declared dead. The heartbreaking moment has deeply affected both the family and the local community.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the shooting appears to be gang-related and that the child was not the intended target. She added that the investigation is still ongoing, and officials are working to find out which groups may be involved.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his grief over the incident. He said the loss of such a young life is devastating and called it a reminder that more efforts are needed to stop gun violence in the city.

Even though gun violence has decreased in recent years, incidents like this show that the problem still exists. Data from the police shows that there were 688 shooting incidents in 2025, which was lower than the previous year. However, this tragic event highlights the need for stronger action to keep people, especially children, safe.
