Ayutthaya Aims for Extended Visitor Stays

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports in Thailand has announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at positioning Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya as a premier sustainable and high-value tourism hub. On May 6, 2026, Minister Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul led a crucial tourism development discussion at the Krungsri River Hotel in Ayutthaya Province, focusing on strategies to boost tourist expenditure, promote overnight stays, and ensure better revenue distribution within local communities.

This meeting convened an array of stakeholders, including senior government officials, tourism executives, local leaders, and private sector representatives. Attendees featured the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Ayutthaya Province Governor, the Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor, alongside others connected to tourism development. Conversations revolved around crafting an effective tourism model that resonates with contemporary travelers while safeguarding the region's rich historical and cultural essence.

Minister Surasak stated that Ayutthaya was chosen as the pilot province for this nationwide tourism initiative due to its significant historical relevance and tourism viability. As one of Thailand's renowned World Heritage sites, Ayutthaya draws millions of visitors annually. Nevertheless, the region faces pressing tourism challenges, hindering local businesses' economic growth.

A major issue raised during the meeting was the predominance of one-day visitors to Ayutthaya. Authorities disclosed that nearly 90 percent of tourists only spend a few hours in the city before heading back to Bangkok or nearby areas, resulting in a low average spending of around 1,800 to 2,000 baht per individual, which underutilizes Ayutthaya's potential as an international heritage destination.

To address this challenge, tourism leaders along with local business groups proposed innovative projects intended to extend visitor stays and enhance their experience of Ayutthaya's offerings. A significant initiative is the River Night Lighting project, proposing the installation of solar-powered lights at twelve key riverside historical sites. This aims to create a captivating atmosphere for evening sightseeing and nighttime river cruises, anticipated to become a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists.

Another pivotal proposal involved the branding of Global Muay Thai, emphasizing the renowned Wai Kru Muay Thai ceremony as a world-class cultural event designed to attract martial arts enthusiasts and international visitors. Officials believe this project can enhance Thailand’s cultural soft power and shape a unique tourism identity for Ayutthaya.

The gathering also prioritized modern tourism technology and inclusive travel solutions. Proposals were put forward to develop a Smart Tourism and Data Center dedicated to analyzing visitor behavior and enhancing tourism strategies through precise data utilization. Infrastructure upgrades and universal designs are also being considered to better accommodate senior tourists, those with disabilities, and affluent international visitors seeking seamless travel experiences.

Local authorities are also advocating for a community-managed walking street and night market to amplify evening activities and generate fresh income opportunities for residents. The provincial administration of Ayutthaya is devising a comprehensive master plan to enhance connectivity among tourism routes from the historical island area to surrounding districts via an electric vehicle transport system and newly planned riverside piers, thereby boosting travel convenience and sustainability.

In closing the meeting, Minister Surasak expressed his optimism regarding the successful execution of all proposed initiatives through effective collaboration among government bodies, the private sector, and local communities. He affirmed that Ayutthaya has the capacity to evolve into a world-class destination where tourists will engage longer, spend more, and return frequently. This innovative tourism approach is anticipated to play a crucial role in bolstering Thailand’s economy while preserving its cultural heritage sustainably.
