Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen has shared insights from the historic Artemis II mission, saying the journey not only advanced space exploration but also created a strong and lasting bond among the crew members.
Speaking after returning to Earth, Hansen described how the team developed a deep friendship during the mission. He explained that although space travel carries serious risks, he felt mentally prepared rather than afraid. According to him, it was not about bravery but about being ready for the challenges and focusing on the experience.
The mission, led by NASA, included astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Hansen. The crew launched from Florida and spent more than nine days in space, travelling around the Moon and setting a record for the farthest distance humans have ever travelled from Earth.
During the journey, the crew witnessed unique and breathtaking sights. Hansen described observing the Moon’s surface in detail, noting differences in colour and layers that revealed its geological history. One of the most memorable moments was seeing a solar eclipse from space, where the Moon appeared dark and surrounded by a glowing halo from the Sun’s outer atmosphere.
The mission also stood out because it took place in the digital age, with live updates and images shared globally. This allowed people around the world to follow the journey in real time, making it one of the most widely watched space missions in recent history.
Hansen also spoke about the emotional impact of viewing Earth from a great distance. He said it made him feel how small and fragile the planet is, but at the same time, it showed the strength of teamwork. The crew supported each other throughout the mission, which helped them succeed in a challenging environment.
As a first-time space traveller, Hansen was unsure how his body would react to zero gravity. However, he reported feeling comfortable and did not experience motion sickness, which is common among astronauts. This made his experience even more positive.
The Artemis II mission is an important step toward future lunar exploration. It will be followed by more missions, including plans to land astronauts on the Moon again in the coming years. Hansen emphasized that the success of this mission shows what can be achieved when people work together and aim for ambitious goals.
