Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, Régine Chassagne Confirm Separation

Arcade Fire's lead vocalists and founding members, Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, have officially announced their separation after more than two decades together. The couple shared the news on social media, stating that while their marriage has come to an end, their bond as “creative soulmates” and dedication to Arcade Fire remains unbroken.

Win Butler and Régine Chassagne met at McGill University in Montreal during the early 2000s, when Arcade Fire was just beginning to take shape. The couple married in 2003, just a year before the band's debut album turned them into one of indie rock’s most influential acts.

The band’s mainstream breakthrough came in 2011, when their critically acclaimed album The Suburbs won Grammy Album of the Year, placing Arcade Fire on the global stage. Throughout their career, Butler and Chassagne have been the core of the band’s musical identity, blending personal and artistic chemistry into their work.

In 2022, Butler faced allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior reported by Pitchfork, with four individuals accusing him of non-consensual encounters. Butler denied the claims, stating that all relationships were consensual. Chassagne continued to perform with the band during the fallout, signaling mutual support during a difficult period.

Earlier this year, Arcade Fire released their seventh studio album, Pink Elephant, followed by a global tour. Despite their separation, Butler and Chassagne affirmed that the band will continue as they “love, admire and support each other,” especially while co-parenting their 12-year-old son.

Their statement ended with a gesture of unity and mutual respect—promising that while their personal relationship has changed, the music and mission of Arcade Fire will endure.
