Apple's iOS 27 Might Allow Users to Pick Their AI Tools

Apple is reportedly set to transform its approach to artificial intelligence on its devices. TechCrunch and Bloomberg have unveiled that the upcoming iOS 27 may feature a function enabling users to select which AI models power various tasks on their iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Known internally as “Extensions,” this feature is anticipated to create a more open environment for Apple’s AI system. Users could opt for third-party AI solutions to enhance functionalities, such as Siri interactions, writing help, image creation, and more, directly from the Settings app.

Sources indicate that AI models from firms like Google and Anthropic are currently being evaluated within this framework.

If this initiative goes live, it would signify a notable shift in Apple’s strategy. Historically, the company has exerted stringent control over its software and had limited external integrations with core features. The burgeoning generative AI landscape has intensified competition, with entities such as Microsoft and OpenAI rapidly embedding AI into their offerings.
