Lagos, Nigeria – Anthony Joshua, the former heavyweight boxing champion, has been released from the hospital after a grave car accident in southwestern Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of two of his close friends.

The incident took place on Monday on a bustling highway linking Lagos and Ibadan, where Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck. According to authorities, he sustained minor injuries. Unfortunately, his longtime strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, and personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, lost their lives in the tragic event.

Initial investigations conducted by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) pointed out that the vehicle was exceeding speed limits and experienced a tyre blowout prior to the crash. The vehicle's driver, who has also been released from the hospital, is now under police scrutiny regarding potential reckless driving charges.

In an official statement, representatives from Lagos and Ogun state confirmed Joshua's discharge late Wednesday, announcing he is "clinically fit for recovery at home." Joshua, visibly shaken by the loss of his two dear friends, visited the funeral home with his mother, where preparations for Ghami and Ayodele's repatriation are underway.

A British national of Nigerian heritage, Joshua was in Nigeria during the time of the accident. Images of the wreckage of the black SUV involved have been released by the police.

In lighter news recently, Joshua had a victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami this past December and has been rumored to be in talks for a matchup with fellow former British champion Tyson Fury. Before the Paul fight, he faced a knockout loss to Daniel Dubois in September 2024.
