As Gurpurab is observed, Amitabh Bachchan shared a personal chapter of his identity — revealing that his background is partly Sikh, through his mother's family from Punjab.
On Kaun Banega Crorepati 16, the actor spoke about his parents' union and admitted he felt uneasy with the label "inter-caste." He explained that his father came from Uttar Pradesh while his mother belonged to a Sikh household. "I believe I am half-Sardar," he told a contestant, recalling how his maternal aunts would lovingly call him, "sadda Amitabh Singh" — celebrating the child as their own.
In earlier Gurpurab reflections, Amitabh painted a vivid picture of his formative years in Allahabad, where his mother’s devotion resonated at home. He described how her recitations of Gurbani stayed with him: "tati vaar na jaavaee…" He also mentioned his mother, Teji Kaur Suri, his grandfather Sardar Khazan Singh Suri, and the family ties to Anantpur Sahib Gurudwara through his maternal uncles.
These recollections underline how deeply his mother's faith and the melodic Gurbani shaped his memories of the festival and home life.
About Amitabh Bachchan’s Parents:
Harivansh Rai Bachchan: A celebrated Hindi poet best known for Madhushala, he was a leading voice in the Nayi Kavita movement and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1976. Born in Babupatti, he adopted "Bachchan" as his literary pen name.
Teji Bachchan (née Teji Kaur Suri): Born into a Sikh family in Lyallpur, Punjab (now in Pakistan), she was active in social causes and passionate about theatre. She met Harivansh during a college event in Lahore and the couple married in Allahabad in 1941.
The marriage of Harivansh and Teji, much like Amitabh’s later marriage to Jaya Bhaduri in 1973, bridged regional and cultural backgrounds — a reminder of the blended traditions within many Indian families.
