Alyssa Healy, the 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Australia, has declared her retirement from international cricket, stating that the forthcoming matches against India will mark her final appearance for the national team. After stepping into the captaincy role following Meg Lanning's retirement in late 2023, Healy leaves a legacy adorned with numerous World Cup victories and personal milestones.
Healy has been a cornerstone of the Australian women's cricket team, playing a crucial role in winning two ODI World Cups and six T20 World Cups. In an emotional announcement on Tuesday, she shared how, although her love for representing Australia remains strong, she feels a decline in the competitive spirit that has driven her, making it the perfect time to retire.
Reflecting on her cricket journey, Healy mentioned her fond memories of teammate bonding, the thrill of singing the team song, and the honor of opening the batting for her nation.
Since debuting in 2010, Healy has scored 3,563 runs in ODIs, including seven centuries, along with 3,054 runs in T20 internationals featuring one century. As a wicketkeeper, she has impressively tallied 275 dismissals, solidifying her status among the sport's finest.
Cricket Australia's Chief Executive lauded Healy as one of the game's greatest, emphasizing her substantial contributions on and off the field throughout her remarkable 15-year career. Her legacy is further highlighted by her association with renowned cricketing figures, including her uncle Ian Healy and her husband Mitchell Starc.
Having already stepped back from T20 internationals, Healy is set to play her last international games in a series featuring three ODIs and one Test against India scheduled for February and March. Despite the advancements in women’s cricket and her impressive consistency—missing only two matches since her debut in 2011—this last Test will mark just the 11th she has played in the longer format.
Alyssa Healy’s retirement signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter in Australian cricket, leaving behind a legacy marked by exceptional skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the game.
