Toronto: Young Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala is poised to make her entry into the Australian Open main draw, facing off against Alycia Parks from the USA, ranked No. 100 in the world, on Sunday, January 18.
Eala, just 20 years old, has achieved a remarkable career-high ranking of No. 49 and arrives at this tournament in superb form, illustrating she is peaking at precisely the right moment.
Impressive Performance by Eala
The young star shone at the WTA ASB Classic in Auckland, advancing to the semifinals. She further showcased her skills by dominating an exhibition match against Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic during the Kooyong Classic. These victories significantly enhanced her confidence as she heads into her Grand Slam debut.
Parks: A Fearsome Competitor
Despite her ranking, Alycia Parks, 25, is a formidable adversary renowned for her powerful serve. She holds the record for the fastest serve in US Open history, clocked at 129 mph, a record she shares with the legendary Venus Williams. Parks clinched victory at the 2023 Lyon Open and reached the third round of the Australian Open two years ago.
First Encounter on the Court
Sunday's match will mark the inaugural meeting between Eala and Parks on the WTA Tour. For Eala, it is a significant milestone, as it completes her appearances in the main draws of all four Grand Slam tournaments.
High Stakes Ahead
“I believe this is the best I’ve ever played,” Eala reflected after her warm-up matches in Melbourne. “I feel I’m in a good moment, so I hope to maintain that momentum.”
Should she overcome Parks, Eala will encounter a challenging second round against either world No. 19 Karolína Muchová, a former French Open finalist, or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, who is ranked 37th.
