Alcaraz Shines Brightly in Melbourne Showdown

Carlos Alcaraz showcased his skills in a thrilling third-round match at the Australian Open, clearly acknowledging that Corentin Moutet triumphed in the drop-shot duel.

The reigning world No. 1 secured a convincing 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 victory over the French 32nd seed on Rod Laver Arena, advancing to the fourth round and continuing his quest for a career Grand Slam. Yet, the bout was anything but straightforward, transforming into a dazzling display of creativity, improvisation, and exciting shot-making.

Moutet, celebrated for his unorthodox approach, entertained the crowd with an array of shots — from drop shots and slices to lobs, tweeners, volleys, and even an underarm serve — making Alcaraz stay on his toes throughout the match.

“Playing against someone like Corentin, you’re never quite sure what to expect,” Alcaraz reflected post-match. “It was a blast. We both delivered some thrilling moments out there.”

The Spanish star, who honed his drop-shot techniques from a young age, humorously remarked that he finally encountered a rival who excelled in that skill.

“I felt we were in a drop-shot contest,” he chuckled. “But he certainly outperformed me!”

Late in the first set, Alcaraz even conveyed his fatigue to his team, noting he was weary of chasing down Moutet's shots. Nonetheless, he responded with a series of breathtaking plays, including tweeners and finely executed volleys, ensuring he maintained control of the match.

Moutet posed a temporary threat by winning four consecutive games in the second set, but Alcaraz remained unshaken, raising his game to swiftly regain the upper hand.

Unlike his previous match where he faced jeers for an underarm serve, Moutet was embraced by the Melbourne crowd this time, tipping his cap in acknowledgment after executing a particularly impressive net play.

Next up for Alcaraz is the 19th-seeded Tommy Paul, who advanced after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina retired due to injury while trailing 6-1, 6-1.

Sabalenka and Gauff Forge Ahead

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and third seed Coco Gauff each faced tough challenges to progress to the fourth round.

Sabalenka triumphed over Anastasia Potapova in a nail-biter, winning 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7), later admitting that she lacked synchronization during the match.

“At times, my mind, hands, and racket were out of sync,” Sabalenka shared. “She played fantastic tennis. It truly was a battle.”

The defending champion narrowly escaped three set points in the first before finally closing it out in a tiebreak. The second set mirrored the tension, as Potapova threatened with three set points of her own, yet Sabalenka maintained composure to finish strong.

Attempting to clinch her third Australian Open title in four years, she will next face the Canadian teen Victoria Mboko, who overcame 14th seed Clara Tauson with a score of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3.

Coco Gauff also needed to rally after a rocky beginning, dropping the first set to Hailey Baptiste but rebounding to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. The American improved her game significantly in the second set, minimizing errors and steering clear of double faults.

Rising Stars Shine as Medvedev Prepares for Rematch

Eighteen-year-old Iva Jovic delivered a major upset by defeating seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 7-6 (3). After experiencing two breakages while serving for the match, Jovic resolved to play aggressively rather than hold back.

She will meet Yulia Putintseva next, who managed to ease past a challenging crowd to defeat Zeynep Sonmez by 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3.

In another compelling match, Daniil Medvedev displayed resilience by coming back from two sets down to beat Fabian Marozsan 6-7 (5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 — marking his fifth career recovery from a 0-2 deficit in a Grand Slam match.

“I was frustrated with myself earlier,” Medvedev admitted. “In the third set, I had to release that tension and concentrate on what needed to be done.”

The former US Open champion is now set for a highly anticipated rematch against American Learner Tien, who defeated him in a previous five-set thriller at last year’s Australian Open, after Tien advanced again with a score of 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-2 over Nuno Borges.
