Alberta Schools Brace for Strike Online Home Lessons Ready

Alberta schools are set to close as the province prepares for a possible teachers’ strike on Monday. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said the government has already posted an online curriculum for parents to teach their children at home if the strike occurs.

The strike would affect more than 700,000 students across public, separate, and francophone schools. Nicolaides said it would be unfair for students to face the consequences of the labour dispute.

Earlier this week, nearly 90 per cent of Alberta Teachers’ Association members who voted rejected the province’s latest offer. The proposal included a 12 per cent pay increase over four years and a plan to hire 3,000 additional teachers.

Union president Jason Schilling acknowledged that a strike might cause difficulties for parents but said teachers are taking a stand for children’s education. He added that parents should pressure the government to treat education more seriously.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association represents about 51,000 teachers. Negotiations over wages, classroom resources, and student support have been ongoing for months. Previous offers from the government failed to meet union demands, leading to the current strike threat.

Officials say the online curriculum is designed to allow students to continue learning at home. Parents can access resources tailored to grade levels and subjects to minimize disruption to students’ studies.

The province is urging families to plan for school closures and to monitor updates from their local school boards.

Negotiations could resume at any time, but as of now, schools are preparing to close, and parents are encouraged to use the online resources provided by the government.
