In a significant achievement for the environment, the Ajman Department of Municipal Affairs and Planning has made strides in 2026, enhancing sustainability and boosting the emirate's overall ecological performance.

The Department shared promising results regarding air quality and waste management for the first quarter, aligning with its strategic vision for environmental excellence. This encompasses pollution reduction, pathways to carbon neutrality, and efforts to protect biodiversity while optimizing waste systems in accordance with the Ajman 2030 vision.

Dr. Eng. Khalid Maeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, noted that improved coordination and ongoing efforts have significantly upgraded monitoring protocols and environmental assessments. He emphasized the success in managing oil and grease waste while promoting compliance among local businesses.

Official statistics reveal that Ajman experienced a remarkable 97.60% of days with superior air quality in Q1 2026, indicating effective pollution control measures, particularly in urban sectors. Concurrently, the processed waste figure hit 25%, showcasing improved waste management practices and adherence to environmental standards.

The collection of oil and grease waste has surged compared to the previous year. In January, 232,411 gallons were collected, a significant jump from 101,642 gallons in 2025. February saw 210,872 gallons compared to 80,761 gallons last year, and March recorded 85,270 gallons, up from 34,866 gallons. These increases, varying between 129% and 161%, were achieved through a newly implemented electronic system, enhanced data precision, broader coverage, and intensified inspections.

Among the environmental initiatives, the Department introduced the “Carbon-Zero Schools” programme, enlisting 60 schools in Q1, comprising 20 public and 40 private institutions. Workshops aimed at students have been organized, and a special committee is being established for oversight of the program.

The number of inspections has also risen, with 500 conducted since the year's commencement. These inspections focused on establishments managing chemicals, oils, and other environmentally impactful operations, particularly in sensitive zones to enhance compliance and minimize risks.

Further, the Department is working on key initiatives, including a waste sorting line at the transfer station capable of processing over 500 tonnes daily. This aims to improve recycling rates and decrease landfill waste. Additional projects focus on sewage sludge processing, hazardous waste oversight, and waste-to-energy research, promoting a circular economy model.

Officials affirm that these results highlight ongoing advancements in Ajman’s environmental framework through effective policies and focused initiatives. The Department is dedicated to fostering collaborations with both public and private sectors to pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
