In India, tea reigns as a beloved beverage, often enjoyed in the morning. However, its health benefits hinge on how it's consumed. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, an AIIMS-trained gastroenterologist now operating out of California, has raised alarms about widespread tea-drinking errors that threaten gut and liver well-being.
On November 14, Dr. Sethi took to Instagram, detailing seven habits that tea enthusiasts should steer clear of. He emphasized that while tea possesses numerous benefits, detrimental practices can quietly compromise health.
1. Consuming Tea on an Empty Stomach
According to Dr. Sethi, starting the day with tea on an empty stomach may lead to stomach lining irritation, resulting in acid reflux, nausea, or abdominal discomfort.
2. Excessive Sugar in Tea
Many people sweeten their tea or opt for sugary iced variants, which can contain 30–40 grams of sugar. Dr. Sethi warns that such high sugar intake can heighten the risk of fatty liver and diabetes.
3. The Risks of Detox or Slimming Teas
Dr. Sethi cautioned that many detox and slimming teas carry laxative properties. These can lead to dehydration, mineral imbalances, and chronic gut issues, so he advises complete avoidance of these products.
4. Overconsumption of Green Tea Extract
While green tea can be beneficial, Dr. Sethi notes that green tea supplements pose certain risks. These extracts have been associated with rare liver complications, making brewed tea a safer choice.
Other Notable Mistakes
Though Dr. Sethi outlined seven errors, the overarching message is clear: enjoy tea mindfully. Limit sugar intake, avoid processed tea products, and refrain from drinking tea at inappropriate times. Minor adjustments can significantly enhance gut and liver health, allowing tea's benefits to shine.
