Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC's Managing Director and Group CEO, has celebrated a significant milestone in environmental conservation by planting the five millionth mangrove seedling at the Al Nouf mangrove forest in Abu Dhabi.
This landmark achievement indicates that ADNOC has surpassed the halfway point in its goal of planting 10 million mangroves by 2030. This initiative is crucial to the UAE's broader ambition to plant 100 million mangroves nationwide by the decade's close.
The mangrove program is integral to ADNOC's enduring commitment to safeguarding the environment, promoting biodiversity, and fostering climate solutions rooted in nature. Mangroves are essential for coastal protection, carbon storage, marine habitat support, and enhancing the resilience of coastal ecosystems.
During his visit, Dr. Al Jaber emphasized that environmental stewardship is fundamental to ADNOC’s strategy, envisioning long-term sustainable value for the UAE. He highlighted the company's advancement toward its 2030 target through the use of cutting-edge technologies that address conservation while responsibly fulfilling global energy demands.
Launched in 2023, ADNOC's mangrove planting initiative employs AI-driven drone technology developed locally to efficiently and accurately plant mangroves at scale. The program is also enhanced by sophisticated monitoring systems and machine learning tools that assess mangrove health, growth rates, and overall success in restoration, ensuring enduring ecological benefits.
Community engagement has been pivotal to the project’s success from the outset. In 2025 alone, over 1,000 volunteers participated in planting efforts, dedicating countless hours to conservation. Since the program’s inception, approximately 6,000 individuals have contributed to ADNOC’s mangrove planting, coastal clean-up, and biodiversity initiatives across Abu Dhabi.
Participants include students, community organizations, People of Determination, and ADNOC staff, all actively supporting the project at various stages.
In 2024, ADNOC joined the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative, spearheaded by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), to expedite mangrove restoration, promote research, and foster greater involvement from the private sector and community. These efforts align with the UAE’s Plant the Emirates Programme and the World Economic Forum’s One Trillion Trees Initiative.
With the successful planting of five million mangroves, ADNOC’s initiative is positioning itself as one of the largest corporate-led ecological restoration endeavors in the region, further solidifying Abu Dhabi's role as a front-runner in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
