Dozens of international activists, including Greta Thunberg and Mandla Mandela, have returned to their home countries, alleging mistreatment while detained in Israel following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Israel denies the claims.
Arrests During Gaza-Bound Mission
Israeli forces intercepted 42 boats of the flotilla between Wednesday and Friday, arresting approximately 450 activists attempting to deliver symbolic aid to Gaza, which is experiencing severe food shortages. Those detained were brought to Israel, where many remain in custody.
Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry stated it offered voluntary deportation to all detainees. Many chose to remain to pursue a legal deportation process.
Allegations of Abuse
Italian journalist Saverio Tommasi, arriving at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, claimed detainees were mistreated, with medicine withheld and prisoners demeaned. He said Thunberg was singled out, mocked with an Israeli flag, and tied arms, describing the experience as “verbal and psychological violence.”
Another Italian journalist, Lorenzo D’Agostino, reported being repeatedly woken, intimidated with dogs, and threatened by soldiers pointing laser sights at detainees. He also alleged theft of personal belongings.
Activist Paolo De Montis described being forced to stay on his knees for hours in a cramped prison van while enduring slaps and intimidation.
Israel Denies Allegations
Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry called the allegations “brazen lies” and stated all legal rights of detainees had been fully upheld. It added that Thunberg had not complained about the treatment, labeling the claims as “ludicrous and baseless.”
Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defended the actions of prison staff, calling the activists supporters of terrorism and claiming they deserved treatment equivalent to that of prisoners convicted of terrorist offenses.
International Reactions
The arrests drew criticism from multiple governments, including Turkey, Colombia, Pakistan, and Greece, which lodged a formal protest regarding Ben-Gvir’s statements and behavior. Sweden confirmed it is actively ensuring the rights of its nationals are observed.
Global Protests
The flotilla interception has sparked demonstrations worldwide, highlighting continued international concern over the Gaza blockade and the treatment of those attempting to challenge it.
