New Engineering Standards Introduced in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In an effort to bolster its engineering field, Abu Dhabi is implementing a significant upgrade with the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) launching a new professional ranking system that features four unique levels of accreditation designed for engineers across all recognized specialities.

Following Administrative Decision 113/2025, the emirate is evolving from the old three-tier model to a more comprehensive structure consisting of Intern Engineer, Practitioner Engineer, Professional Engineer, and Expert Engineer. This initiative seeks to establish a clearer, merit-based advancement path while putting technical proficiency at the forefront of qualified recognition.

Aspiring engineers are required to commence at the Intern Engineer level, subsequently progressing to Practitioner status by passing essential examinations. For those aiming for higher ranks, the Professional and Expert categories necessitate validated academic qualifications, the successful completion of related exams, and a blend of hands-on experience supported by Professional Development Units (PDUs). These PDUs can be obtained through specialized training, accredited educational programs, and other engagements endorsed by DMT to ensure consistency with industry standards.

The newly structured examination system aims to thoroughly evaluate both technical knowledge and regulatory understanding. Assessments will assess engineering skills, industry-specific practices, administrative acumen, and comprehension of the construction and building regulations pertinent to projects in Abu Dhabi.

Additionally, to assist engineers awaiting the completion of certain required qualifications—such as degree equivalency or outstanding exams—the DMT has introduced a temporary conditional registration. This provisional status permits them to legally work while they fulfill the criteria for full, permanent registration.

With these enhancements now being implemented, the emirate aspires to cultivate a strong engineering workforce ready for future challenges, rooted in consistent standards and ongoing professional growth.
