Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman has officially taken over today as the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), heralding a significant shift in leadership within a vital enforcement agency. His appointment follows the retirement of Tan Sri Azam Baki, who concluded his 42-year service with the commission just yesterday.

The transition in leadership occurred in Putrajaya, where Abdul Halim reported to the MACC headquarters. Officials within the government welcomed this appointment, with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar voicing confidence in Abdul Halim’s extensive experience and professionalism. He noted that Abdul Halim’s legal acumen and credibility would bolster the commission’s initiative and enhance its standing both domestically and internationally.

Shamsul Azri also shared images of Abdul Halim receiving his official letter of appointment and wished him success in fulfilling his new role. There is optimism among government officials that the new MACC chief will uphold the mission to enhance transparency, fortify anti-corruption measures, and reinforce public trust in national institutions. Abdul Halim, a former High Court judge, is celebrated for his impressive legal and judicial credentials.

Alongside this appointment, honors were paid to the outgoing chief commissioner Azam Baki for his extensive service and leadership within the commission. Shamsul Azri commended Azam’s contributions over four decades, mentioning numerous reforms and significant milestones achieved during his tenure. He acknowledged Azam’s pivotal role in enhancing the MACC’s stature as a principal agency in the fight against corruption and the misuse of power.

Azam Baki’s departure signifies a transformative chapter for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. During his time, he was instrumental in managing a variety of high-profile corruption probes and facilitating essential institutional changes. Although his leadership faced its share of political discourse and public scrutiny, the government has recognized his unwavering dedication and contribution toward the nation’s anti-corruption initiatives.

The selection of Abdul Halim Aman received endorsement from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on April 25. Official sources indicate that Abdul Halim is set to serve as the MACC chief commissioner under a two-year contract running from May 13, 2026, until May 12, 2028. This appointment underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to bolstering anti-corruption governance and accountability in Malaysia.

In a recent announcement, the MACC welcomed Abdul Halim as its new leader and pledged support for his administration. The commission is eager to continue its efforts in combating corruption, enhancing integrity standards, and reinforcing public confidence in Malaysia’s legal and enforcement systems under its new leadership.
