Devastating 6.5 Magnitude Quake Hits Acapulco, Resulting in Two Fatalities

A devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Mexico, unleashing shockwaves across coastal areas and the capital, resulting in at least two fatalities and extensive destruction near the center of the quake.

The quake struck just before 8:00 am local time, with its epicenter around 14 kilometers southwest of San Marcos, a town in Guerrero state. The tremor was sufficiently strong to be felt nearly 400 kilometers away in Mexico City, where emergency alerts triggered a mass evacuation of residents during the holiday weekend.

In the capital, a 60-year-old man tragically lost his life after falling from his second-floor apartment as he evacuated. Local authorities confirmed at least 12 injuries, although significant structural damage was not reported in the metropolitan area.

President Claudia Sheinbaum was conducting her usual morning press briefing when the alarms sounded, leading to a precautionary evacuation of the presidential palace.

San Marcos reported the brunt of the destruction, with numerous homes either entirely destroyed or critically damaged. Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado announced the death of a woman in her fifties whose house collapsed during the quake. Local estimates indicate around 50 homes incurred severe damage, with nearly every building displaying visible cracks.

Residents recounted scenes of terror and ruin, pointing to collapsed walls and deep fissures throughout their homes. Many chose to remain outdoors for hours, apprehensive about possible aftershocks.

In Acapulco, a well-known tourist hub, sirens echoed through the city as visitors and locals evacuated hotels and buildings in panic. Some tourists dashed into the streets, leaving their belongings behind in haste.

Mexico occupies a zone where five tectonic plates converge, making earthquakes a common concern. Experts highlight that tremors originating off the Pacific coast, particularly near Guerrero, tend to be strongly felt in Mexico City thanks to its soft, lakebed soil, which amplifies seismic waves.

The nation has historically invested heavily in early warning systems, including mobile notifications and public announcements, which once again were vital in aiding swift evacuations and reducing fatalities.

Authorities are currently focused on damage assessment and tracking aftershocks as recovery efforts commence in the impacted communities.
