5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Border Region of Tajikistan and Xinjiang

Early Friday, a moderate earthquake registering 5.8 on the Richter scale struck the border area between Tajikistan and Xinjiang, based on official seismic reports. The epicenter was located around 2 a.m. local time at a depth of about 159 kilometers, as found by the Pakistan Meteorological Department. In contrast, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre rated the quake at 5.3 with a depth of 140 kilometers using the Moment Magnitude scale.

Tremors from the seismic event were felt across a wide region encompassing parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as adjacent areas in China and Afghanistan. The U.S. Geological Survey verified the expansive tremors. Fortunately, no injuries, casualties, or structural damage have been reported from any of the affected locations.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have rolled out precautionary measures to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to remain vigilant yet calm, with emergency teams on standby to respond if needed. This incident serves as a reminder of the frequent seismic activity in the region, prompting officials to stress the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone areas.
