Violent Attack at Japanese Tyre Factory Injures 15; Suspect Detained

On Friday, a disturbing attack at a tyre manufacturing facility in central Japan left 15 individuals injured, triggering an immediate emergency response and a thorough police probe. A 38-year-old man was arrested at the location under suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly attacking several workers with a knife and also throwing a harmful chemical.

This incident unfolded at a factory owned by Yokohama Rubber Co. in Mishima, located in the Shizuoka prefecture, west of Tokyo. The facility primarily produces tyres for trucks and buses.

Injuries Sustained by Multiple Workers

Local fire officials reported that eight workers sustained stab wounds and were quickly transported to hospitals. Five of these individuals are said to be in critical condition. Additionally, seven others experienced injuries due to the chemical thrown during the attack, and all are currently receiving medical attention.

Emergency responders from the Fujisan Nanto Fire Department were among the first on the scene, securing the area and administering aid before taking the victims to hospitals throughout the region.

Suspect Taken into Custody

Authorities from Shizuoka prefecture confirmed that the suspect was apprehended inside the factory shortly after the incident began. He faces charges of attempted murder, but investigators have not yet disclosed any potential motives or confirmed his employment status with the company.

According to the Associated Press, police are still questioning witnesses as they seek to clarify the sequence of events and gather information about the suspect.

Disturbing Details Emerge

Local news reports, such as those from Asahi newspaper, shared unsettling details about the attack. The suspect was reportedly brandishing a survival knife and appeared to have been wearing a gas mask during the assault. Investigators are conducting tests to identify the chemical substance involved, with preliminary reports indicating it may have been bleach.

Factory Secured, Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement cordoned off the factory shortly after the attack to ensure there was no further risk to employees. Officers are gathering evidence, scrutinizing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the violence.

As confirmed by authorities, no additional injuries occurred after the suspect's apprehension. Factory operations have been suspended as a preventive measure, with employees evacuated while safety protocols are executed.
