A family tragedy has escalated dramatically as Haryana Police have charged former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his spouse, Razia Sultana, in connection with the death of their son, Aqil Akhtar, aged 35. This development follows disturbing social media posts from Aqil that hinted at life-threatening concerns. What was initially categorized as a natural death is now being investigated as a significant murder case in Punjab.
Aqil was found unconscious at his residence in Panchkula's Sector 4 on the evening of October 16 and was declared dead upon arriving at a local hospital. Initially, the family claimed that a drug overdose was to blame, and a post-mortem was conducted the next day. However, the situation shifted dramatically as social media activity by Aqil triggered a deeper investigation into potential foul play.
The situation intensified when Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a family acquaintance, circulated an August video featuring Aqil. In this clip, Aqil alleged that both his father and wife were involved in an affair and expressed fears for his safety. He stated, "I have discovered my wife’s affair with my dad. The mental strain has been overwhelming... I suspect they would frame me for a false crime." He even implicated his mother and sister, suggesting they were part of a plot to either imprison or take his life.
Aqil further claimed that he was wrongfully confined to a rehabilitation center, asserting, "This confinement was illegal as I wasn't under the influence… They threatened me with claims they would frame me for serious crimes if I acted against them." Though later videos showed him seemingly retracting his statements due to mental health concerns, he continued to voice fears, stating, "Will they get me killed? They are all deceitful people."
In response, the Panchkula Police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) spearheaded by an officer of ACP rank, promising a thorough investigation. Deputy Commissioner Srishti Gupta emphasized, "The SIT will approach this case with impartiality, ensuring all findings are based on solid evidence, targeting justice for both the guilty and the innocent equally."
Mohammad Mustafa retired as the DGP in 2021 and later became associated with the Congress party. Razia Sultana, a three-time MLA for Malerkotla, served as a cabinet minister between 2017 and 2022. This case has sparked nationwide interest, underscoring the significant role of social media in criminal investigations intertwined with high-profile family dynamics.
