The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has restructured its leadership team ahead of the international engagements. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Saif Hassan have been designated as vice-captains for their respective formats: Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20 Internationals (T20Is). This strategic move precedes Bangladesh's matches against Ireland, featuring both Tests and T20Is.
In the Test arena, Mehidy Hasan Miraz will serve as vice-captain to Najmul Hossain Shanto, who retains his captaincy until at least the end of the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. Mehidy's new role emphasizes his significance as a senior player within the squad and a pivotal figure in the spin department.
Conversely, the vice-captaincy in ODIs is assigned to Najmul Hossain Shanto, who will support Mehidy Hasan Miraz, named ODI captain in June for the upcoming year. This dual setup bolsters the leadership in both Test and ODI formats, fostering stability as the team aims to enhance their performance across the board.
Saif Hassan, having excelled in the T20 format this past year, steps up as vice-captain for T20Is. In 13 T20I matches, he amassed 344 runs at an average of 34.40, with a striking rate of 131.80, including three half-centuries. The T20I captaincy remains in the hands of Das, who will lead the squad into the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh's leadership changes follow a strong victory against Ireland, where they won the first Test by an innings and 47 runs, taking an early lead in the two-match series. Key contributions came from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (171) and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (100), alongside Hasan Murad, whose four wickets helped clinch the victory.
Despite Ireland's effort in their second innings from players like Andy McBrine (52) and Andy Balbirnie (38), they were unable to surpass Bangladesh's commanding total and disciplined bowling performance. The hosts maintained control throughout the match.
Looking ahead, Bangladesh is set to compete against Ireland in a three-match T20I series starting on November 27. With these new vice-captain appointments, there’s an expectation of enhanced leadership and guidance across formats as the team seeks to build on their recent successes.
The BCB's strategic decision to designate Mehidy Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Saif Hassan as vice-captains signifies an effort to reinforce leadership across all formats. This realignment is anticipated to create a balanced leadership dynamic that leverages both experience and talent. Following their impressive first Test victory over Ireland, Bangladesh seems poised for the upcoming T20I series and subsequent competitions.
