Wicked: For Good Sets New Records with $226M Global Debut

Post by : Mina Carter

The latest installment in the Wicked franchise, titled Wicked: For Good, has shattered box office expectations during its opening weekend. Featuring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the film was initially forecasted to gross $145 million within the North American market, but it impressively topped that, accumulating $150 million domestically.

This achievement marks a new high for film adaptations of Broadway musicals, ranking as the third-largest domestic opening for a musical ever, trailing only behind Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017). The original Wicked had recorded $111 million in its debut weekend, meaning this sequel has outperformed it significantly.

On the international front, Wicked: For Good generated an additional $76 million, pushing its worldwide total to $226 million within just three days. It now stands as the 18th highest-grossing film of 2025, outpacing films like Snow White, Joker: Folie à Deux, and One Battle After Another.

Inspired by the long-lasting Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire’s original 1995 novel, the film revisits The Wizard of Oz narrative. In this sequel, Glinda and Elphaba, who has transformed into the Wicked Witch of the West, confront the sinister agenda of The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).
