A fire in a residential building in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood has forced the closure of a newly opened Italian restaurant and displaced six residents, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on Wednesday night near the busy intersection of Broadway and Main Street.
According to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, emergency crews were called to the scene around 8:15 p.m. after reports of a fire in a three-storey building on East Eighth Avenue. A total of seven fire trucks and 28 firefighters responded quickly to contain the blaze, which had started in a bedroom on the top floor of the building.
Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control in a short time, preventing the fire from spreading further. However, the incident caused significant disruption, as several residents had to leave their homes while officials secured the building and began their investigation. Authorities confirmed that six people were displaced due to the fire.
The building also houses a recently opened Italian restaurant on the ground floor, which suffered water damage during firefighting efforts. The restaurant, which began operations in December, had a full dining room at the time of the incident. Customers and staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Fire officials believe the blaze may have been caused by an accident involving an electric blanket in the bedroom where the fire started. However, investigators are continuing their work to confirm the exact cause.
Road closures were put in place around the area as emergency crews worked at the scene, causing temporary traffic disruptions in the neighbourhood.
The restaurant owners expressed concern over the damage and uncertainty ahead but emphasized relief that everyone was safe. Authorities continue to assess the situation, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
