The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and related equipment to Canada, estimated at US$1.75 billion. Lockheed Martin is set to be the principal contractor.
Canada would acquire 26 HIMARS units and 132 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, along with associated equipment and support.
Purpose of the Sale
The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) stated that the sale aims to support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing Canada’s military capabilities. It will also strengthen Canada’s contribution to collective defense and deterrence in Europe through NATO.
Canada’s NATO Commitment
Prime Minister Mark Carney has committed to meeting Canada’s NATO defense spending target of two per cent of national GDP by fiscal year 2025-26, highlighting the country’s focus on international security obligations.
