The war in Ukraine has now stretched into its third year with both nations locked in a brutal struggle that has reshaped global politics, economics, and security. Recent statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky underscore what Kyiv sees as a significant shift in momentum. Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces have inflicted major losses on Russia during a renewed counteroffensive, claiming that his troops are gaining strength and making Russia pay a heavy price for its ongoing invasion.

This announcement comes at a time when the war’s trajectory is under close international scrutiny. Ukraine’s ability to hold its lines and push back against Russia carries not just military significance, but also political meaning. The results of this pushback may shape future negotiations, global military aid, and the morale of both nations.

The Nature of Ukraine’s Counteroffensive

Ukraine’s counteroffensive is not about dramatic breakthroughs alone. Instead, it has been characterized by consistent, methodical efforts to weaken Russia’s strongholds in the south and east. Since early summer, Ukrainian units have been advancing step by step, targeting Russian defensive positions while also striking supply lines and ammunition depots.

Military analysts note that such offensives aim to degrade the enemy's strength over time rather than pursue quick, dramatic conquests. This explains why Zelensky highlights Russian losses rather than sweeping Ukrainian territorial gains. By focusing on destroying equipment, exhausting enemy manpower, and undermining morale, Ukraine hopes to gradually tilt the balance.

Satellite images and reports from the front suggest Ukraine has focused particularly on Russian-held areas in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. These territories are not only militarily significant but also hold symbolic and strategic weight, as they represent places Russia has tried to entrench as a permanent part of its control.

Russia’s Position and Denial of Losses

The Russian government has, as expected, denied the scale of the losses reported by Ukraine. Moscow’s officials insist that their soldiers continue to repel Ukrainian advances and that Kyiv’s claims are exaggerated or fabricated. This back-and-forth of counterclaims has become characteristic of the war, as both countries understand the psychological and global impact of perception.

Yet independent assessments do align more closely to Zelensky’s claim of growing Russian losses. Western intelligence and independent organizations have routinely noted Russia’s high casualties throughout the war. Reports also indicate that Moscow has increasingly turned to mobilization, enlisting more men from across the country, and relying on prison recruits through the Wagner Group and other mercenary groups. This indicates, experts say, the immense pressure Moscow faces in sustaining its war effort.

A War of Attrition

One of the most striking features of this conflict is that it has long since become a war of attrition, in which both sides seek to deplete the other’s strength rather than secure quick victories. In such wars, losses and equipment destruction often matter more than territorial lines on a map. Ukraine’s strategy to target Russian tanks, artillery, and logistics supply corridors fits this reality.

Zelensky’s remarks that Russian troops have taken “far greater losses than they admit” highlights how Ukraine wants to signal to international allies that support is yielding tangible results. By showcasing that Russia’s military machine is under strain, Zelensky seeks to reassure allies providing advanced weapons and ammunition that their investment is weakening Moscow.

The Role of Western Support

Ukraine’s capacity to strike back has been heavily dependent on international assistance, particularly from the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Advanced artillery, drones, long-range missiles, and tank systems continue to play a decisive role in the battlefield.

Military experts caution, however, that while Western weapons amplify Ukraine’s chances, it is ultimately Ukrainian soldiers who do the fighting and face the losses. The country’s resilience has been tested through waves of Russian bombings and energy infrastructure attacks, yet Ukrainian units remain intact and motivated. Zelensky has repeatedly praised this determination, calling the defense of Ukraine “a fight not only for territory but for survival and freedom.”

The Human Cost

While much of the discussion centers on losses inflicted on Russia, it is crucial to remember that both sides endure staggering human costs. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians continue to be displaced as missile strikes target cities and villages along the front. Families live under constant threat of bombardments, while millions remain in exile abroad.

Ukraine’s acknowledgment of its own sacrifices reflects the reality that the counteroffensive, despite successes, comes at an immense price. Losses of soldiers and destruction of homes are ongoing, and both the Ukrainian public and leadership are well aware that the road ahead is steep.
