Singapore has pledged a significant contribution of US$12 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) as part of its ongoing dedication to bolster global pandemic readiness and vaccine innovation. This financial support will be allocated over four years from 2027 to 2030.
The announcement was officially made by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung during a CEPI event at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland. This contribution highlights Singapore’s sustained commitment to fostering international collaboration in healthcare and disease prevention.
As indicated by the Ministry of Health, vaccines are essential in controlling infectious disease outbreaks and preparing for potential pandemics. The ministry emphasized that robust international partnerships are vital to ensuring swift vaccine development and distribution during global health crises.
Singapore has been a CEPI partner since 2020, previously supporting the organization’s global vaccination campaigns. Authorities noted that this ongoing collaboration has advanced Singapore’s own capabilities in vaccine research, manufacturing, scientific advisory processes, and regulatory readiness.
Minister Ong Ye Kung remarked on Singapore’s substantial investments in vaccine research and healthcare innovation in recent years. He highlighted how collaboration with CEPI has not only enhanced the nation’s scientific capacity but also contributed to wider international public health initiatives.
The new funding is aimed at supporting CEPI’s goal of speeding up vaccine research and ensuring vaccines are available equitably during health emergencies. CEPI collaborates with governments, research bodies, and pharmaceutical firms globally to enhance epidemic response strategies.
Health experts stress the importance of improved preparedness based on lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries are now concentrating on vaccine security, medical supply chains, and international health collaboration to mitigate risks from emerging diseases.
