Queen Elizabeth II's Iconic Lotus Gown Featured in London Exhibit

London: A remarkable evening gown, inspired by India’s national flower, the lotus, is currently on display in London, featured prominently in an exhibition celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion heritage.

Designed by renowned royal couturier Norman Hartnell, the gown was crafted for a state dinner hosted by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, then-President of India, in January 1961. This splendid garment is one of the highlights of the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” exhibit, showcased at the King’s Gallery in Buckingham Palace.

This exquisite silk gown thrives with intricate zardozi-style embroidery that takes the form of lotus flowers, enhanced by delicate lace, pearl accents, crystals, and sequins, echoing traditional Indian artistry and cultural significance.

As noted by the exhibit’s curator, the lotus design was meticulously chosen due to its status as India’s national flower, making it a fitting tribute for the Queen’s visit.

Originally designed with an extended train, the gown was later modified to include a short bolero jacket, allowing for a more versatile look.

The exhibit further explores Queen Elizabeth II’s use of fashion as a diplomatic instrument during her international travels, featuring another remarkable gown from her 1961 Commonwealth tour, adorned in Pakistan's national colors and highlighted by an elegant emerald-green pleat.

Curators elaborated that designers Hartnell and Hardy Amies crafted culturally sensitive ensembles for the Queen’s historic journey across India, Pakistan, and Nepal in 1961.

This tour was notable as it was the first visit by a British reigning monarch to India post-independence, with Queen Elizabeth II gracing India's Republic Day Parade as the esteemed Guest of Honour.

Organized in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s centenary year, this exhibit reflects on her legacy as Britain’s longest-serving monarch, who departed in September 2022 at age 96.

Caroline de Guitaut, the exhibition’s curator and Surveyor of the King’s Works of Art, stated that this display honors the thoughtful fashion selections of the Queen and showcases the artistry that accompanied her attire throughout her life.

With over 300 outfits and accessories on display, the exhibition spans nearly every phase of Queen Elizabeth II’s life—ranging from her days as a young princess to her reign as monarch. Attendees will also uncover rare design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten notes revealing the meticulous planning involved in royal wardrobe creations.

The exhibition at Buckingham Palace is set to remain open to the public until October, heralded as one of the most thorough royal fashion exhibitions to date.
