In a heartbreaking incident on Montreal's South Shore, provincial police reported a second fatality on Sunday after three young men were struck by a REM train early Saturday morning.
Emergency responders in Longueuil were alerted around 3:10 a.m., a time when public transit services are paused. The incident occurred close to Du Quartier station.
Authorities confirmed the first death was a 19-year-old man who died at the scene on Saturday. A 22-year-old man, who was hospitalized with severe injuries, tragically passed away on Sunday. The third individual, also 19 years old, is currently in stable condition and not in immediate danger.
According to REM officials, the accident happened due to "an intrusion onto the tracks." Police reported that the group of young men attempted to cross both Highway 10 and the REM tracks despite an approaching train.
Although REM trains do not transport passengers at night, they may still operate for maintenance or testing purposes.
After the collision, service on the South Shore Brossard line was halted between Brossard and Panama stations, with a shuttle service provided until operations resumed at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Investigators from Sûreté du Québec are currently on-site to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
