KPop Demon Hunters is making waves as it competes for an Oscar. The animated film from Netflix is now among 35 entries for the Best Animated Feature category at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shared the eligibility lists, which consist of animated, documentary, and international feature films.
Despite achieving significant popularity on Netflix, the film also had a qualifying theatrical run in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco this past June, adhering to the Academy’s stipulations. However, its showings in the UK did not fulfill the requirements for other international accolades.
Among other noteworthy animated films eligible this year are Disney’s Elio, Zootopia 2, Neon’s Arco, and GKids’ Little Amélie or the Character of Rain, alongside Netflix’s In Your Dreams, plus Crunchyroll/Sony’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. Notably, the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2 did not make the cut.
KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix’s most-streamed film, racking up over 541 million viewing hours globally. Its soundtrack has captured the 2025 charts, with eight tracks making their way onto the Billboard Hot 100. The film's initial limited release in August brought in approximately $18 million, followed by a re-release over Halloween. Netflix previously secured the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2022 with Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
In addition to animated features, this year sees 201 documentaries and 86 international films in contention, including Sentimental Value (Norway), Sirât (Spain), The Secret Agent (Brazil), It Was Just an Accident (France), The Voice of Hind Rajab (Tunisia), and My Father’s Shadow (UK). The co-production 2000 Meters to Andriivka is eligible in both the documentary and international categories. The shortlists will be revealed on December 16.
Fans enthused for KPop Demon Hunters will have to stay tuned until January 22 for the Oscar nominations, where the film is also anticipated to compete in the Original Song category with its popular track, Golden.
