Kenneth Jonassen Critiques Malaysia's Singles After Masters Exit

Following another year of poor showing at the Malaysia Masters 2026, Malaysia’s men’s singles badminton players are facing sharp criticism. All players were eliminated in the first round for a second consecutive year, prompting a critical response from national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen.

Among the disappointments was World No. 25 Leong Jun Hao, who narrowly lost to China's Hu Zhe An with scores of 19-21, 21-23, while experienced Indonesian player Anthony Sinisuka Ginting sent Justin Hoh home in straight games. This concluded Malaysia’s involvement in the men’s singles at the tournament held in Bukit Jalil’s Unifi Arena.

After these losses, Jonassen openly questioned the players' mentality and discipline, asserting that their talent and technical skills are not in doubt. He remarked that the players struggled to adhere to tactical plans under pressure and maintained discipline during challenging moments.

As Jonassen noted, contemporary badminton requires a blend of patience, tactical intelligence, and consistency rather than solely focusing on aggressive shots and spectacular winners. He highlighted the necessity to apply sustained pressure on opponents and engage in disciplined rallies instead of aiming solely for flashy points.

He acknowledged the dip in confidence following Malaysia's recent Thomas Cup campaign, where they exited in the quarter-finals after a severe defeat against defending champions, China.

Despite his criticisms, Jonassen affirmed his belief in the current players but warned that significant change hinges on altering their mindset, daily habits, and training methodologies. He clarified that every training session must be purposeful with specific goals rather than simply going through the motions.

In contrast, he commended the women’s singles squad for their better approach to long-term development and mental toughness, recognizing their ability to learn from setbacks and accept responsibility instead of seeking excuses.

This latest early exit has once again sparked concerns among badminton enthusiasts in Malaysia about the future of the men’s singles program in major international contests. Analysts speculate that enhancing mental preparation and tactical discipline will be critical for Malaysia to regain its stature in global badminton.
