Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of Iran, held high-level talks with Asim Munir in Islamabad as diplomatic efforts continue to revive negotiations between Iran and the United States. The meeting comes at a time when Pakistan is playing a key role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
The meeting between Araghchi and Munir was confirmed through official channels, though detailed information about their discussions was not disclosed. The Iranian delegation also included Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei and Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam.
Araghchi arrived in Islamabad late Friday and was received by senior Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. His visit is part of a broader diplomatic tour that also includes stops in Oman and Russia, aimed at coordinating with regional partners.
Despite expectations that the visit could lead to direct talks between Iran and the United States, Iranian officials have clarified that no such meetings are currently planned. Baqaei stated that Iran’s position and observations would instead be conveyed through Pakistan, suggesting a more indirect approach to the negotiations.
Meanwhile, the United States has indicated its willingness to engage. Officials have said that American representatives, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to travel to Pakistan for discussions. However, as of now, their arrival has not been officially confirmed, adding uncertainty to the diplomatic process.
Pakistan has expressed optimism about the ongoing efforts. Officials, including Ishaq Dar, have highlighted the importance of meaningful engagement to achieve regional stability and peace. Islamabad continues to position itself as a neutral mediator, working to bring both sides closer to negotiations.
The current diplomatic push follows earlier talks held on April 11 and 12, which did not result in a breakthrough. However, recent developments, including a decision by Donald Trump to extend the ceasefire with Iran indefinitely, have created space for further dialogue.
Overall, while Araghchi’s visit and meetings mark an important step in ongoing diplomatic efforts, the absence of confirmed direct talks highlights the challenges that remain. The situation continues to evolve as regional and global powers work toward reducing tensions and finding a path to peace.
