His younger brother, investigative journalist Jaie Avila, confirmed the heartbreaking news, offering a heartfelt tribute.
“Jim was an exceptional reporter. He was the reason I chose to enter this field and inspired me in numerous aspects of life,” Jaie remarked. “He earned nearly every prestigious award, but he especially cherished being inducted into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2019.”
Their close bond transcended their professional lives. In 2018, when Jim faced kidney failure, Jaie selflessly donated one of his own kidneys.
“Jim adored his three children above all—Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. The transplant allowed him to witness one of his children marry and become a grandfather to two beautiful grandchildren. That was truly a blessing,” Jaie shared.
Jim had openly expressed how the transplant transformed and extended his life.
“Without it… Jaie and my kids saved me. I couldn't have endured six to eight years of dialysis,” he stated post-surgery. “We hurried to get this done before dialysis, and thankfully we succeeded.”
During his White House tenure, Jim Avila served as a key correspondent under the Obama administration. His investigative reporting was pivotal in informing national debates on significant policy changes, such as the groundbreaking renewal of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba.
