Granville Street Bridge Closed In Both Directions Police Say

Post by : Sophia Matthew

The Granville Street Bridge in Vancouver was closed in both directions on Tuesday after police responded to what authorities described as an ongoing incident on the bridge. The closure began during the busy afternoon rush hour and caused major traffic delays across several parts of the city as drivers were forced to use alternate routes.

The Vancouver Police Department confirmed the bridge closure through social media and advised commuters to avoid the area. Officials asked drivers to use other crossings such as the Burrard Bridge and Cambie Bridge while officers remained at the scene. Public transit services were also affected, with several TransLink bus routes temporarily rerouted because of the incident.

Authorities did not immediately release full details about the situation, but early reports indicated the incident was not criminal in nature. Multiple local reports and social media posts suggested the emergency may have involved a person experiencing a mental health crisis on the bridge. Police have not officially confirmed many of the details circulating online, but emergency crews remained at the location for several hours while traffic stayed blocked in both directions.

Videos and photos shared online appeared to show emergency responders working near the side of the bridge structure during the prolonged closure. Some witnesses reported seeing a woman near the outside edge of the bridge while police and rescue crews attempted to manage the situation safely. However, officials have not publicly verified the online videos or released formal information about the individual involved.

The long closure created significant congestion throughout downtown Vancouver and nearby neighbourhoods. Drivers experienced delays on several connecting roads and bridges as traffic volumes increased across alternate routes. Transit passengers also reported delays during the evening commute because buses that normally travel across the Granville Street Bridge had to be redirected.

The Granville Street Bridge is one of Vancouver’s busiest transportation routes and connects downtown Vancouver with the southern parts of the city. The bridge carries thousands of vehicles daily and serves as an important connection for commuters, transit buses, cyclists, and pedestrians. Any major closure on the bridge often creates widespread traffic disruption across the city’s transportation network.

Police continued asking the public to stay away from the area while emergency crews worked on the incident. As of late Tuesday night, authorities had not provided a final update regarding when the bridge would fully reopen or whether anyone was injured during the situation.
