Delhi's Weather Change Offers Temporary Relief from Scorching Heat

Post by : Shakul

On Friday morning, residents of New Delhi and the surrounding NCR region were greeted by light rainfall and overcast skies, providing a much-needed break from the relentless heatwave that had persisted for several days. This unexpected shift in weather delivered cooler breezes and a refreshing decline in temperatures, easing the discomfort felt during the recent heat.

The India Meteorological Department attributed the sudden rainfall and thunderstorm activity to weather disturbances affecting northwest India. This welcome precipitation offered temporary relief, especially to those enduring the harsh summer conditions prevalent in the capital.

Prior to the onset of rain, Delhi's temperatures soared above 43 degrees Celsius. The primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded a peak temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius, which, despite the slight reduction from the rain, remained above the seasonal average.

Experts identified how winds originating from Rajasthan and the Thar Desert initially exacerbated the heatwave, creating a very dry atmosphere. Fortunately, the recent change in wind direction has led to a brief cooling effect and enhanced moisture levels in the area.

The IMD has cautioned that the heatwave is expected to persist in Delhi until May 28. Authorities anticipate that temperatures may climb close to 45 degrees Celsius again in the coming days, as hot desert winds are projected to re-establish across northern India.

Meteorologists also predict isolated thunderstorms and light rain during the early morning and late evening hours over the coming days, though these occurrences are unlikely to significantly lower daytime temperatures for an extended duration.

Experts point out that pre-monsoon conditions expected in early June could afford more substantial relief from the ongoing heatwave. In the meantime, residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and heed official weather advisories.
