Changi Airport Listed Among Highest Carbon Emitters

In a recent global report, Singapore's Changi Airport has been identified as one of the highest carbon-emitting airports, signaling an urgent conversation around aviation emissions and environmental sustainability.

The 2026 Airport Tracker from Transport & Environment and ODI Global places Changi Airport at ninth globally, with approximately 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions recorded in 2023.

This comprehensive report evaluated nearly 1,300 airports worldwide, using data on aviation emissions sourced from the International Council on Clean Transportation.

Findings indicate that the Asia-Pacific region has emerged as the major contributor to aviation-related carbon dioxide emissions, representing close to 32 percent of worldwide aviation CO2 output.

Jude Lee, regional director at Transport & Environment, emphasized that transparent emissions reporting is vital as Singapore seeks to enhance its role in sustainable aviation and green finance.

The report also revealed that the leading 100 airports account for nearly two-thirds of all passenger flight emissions, raising significant concerns regarding the environmental influence of primary aviation hubs.

Experts have cautioned that the increasing scrutiny on airports may escalate as the European Union contemplates extending carbon pricing regulations to encompass all international flights departing from the EU.

The study highlighted that only a handful of airports currently possess credible long-term plans aiming for net-zero emissions addressing indirect aviations emissions.
